Why Bangkok needs Patpong

Given a classy makeover, Patpong could be one of the city's hotspots

IT’S hard to believe today, but Patpong was once a gem in Thailand’s tourism crown. Even the ladies enjoyed its unique character, vitality and attractions - or at least they seemed to enjoy it.

That’s all in the past, of course, and Bangkok’s most celebrated street is now a mere shadow of its former self. Successive crackdowns by the police and PC brigade have ensured the loss of much, if not all, of its pizzazz.

Some people will lament Patpong’s demise; others will be sad or simply indifferent. One thing is for sure, the Silom area of Bangkok is not quite the same without a vibrant Patpong.

The crowds of visitors and tourists who were once lured by its bright lights have largely disappeared. That’s of course bad news for the bars, restaurants and vendors on the street itself, but it’s also had a negative effect on the many nearby businesses that used to thrive on the back of Patpong’s huge popularity.

Adjoining streets like Suriwongse, Convent and Silom have definitely lost some of their allure as places of entertainment. Sure, there are more shoppers these days – mostly locals working in the area – but anyone who knew Patpong in its glory days will confirm that this part of Bangkok is no longer fun or, in a perverse sense, charming.

In many ways, Bangkok needs Patpong. While no one is suggesting for a moment that its shady past and activities are revived, this famous thoroughfare is in desperate need of a complete makeover to bring it up to scratch.

For a start, the street market needs to go and trees should be planted. No more go-go bars, or clip joints. Only pubs, bars and restaurants with al fresco terraces should be allowed. And Patpong should be a pedestrians-only street around the clock.
