Cooking up food and fun at Harrow

Students at Harrow International School recently cooked lunch for children from the Klong Toei Community. Sasathorn Eimsiri, a Year 12 student, recalls the experience

THE day we were cooking for 45 children from Klong Toei community started out like most days here in Thailand – hot and windy. I arrived at school earlier than usual and when I reached the swimming pool area I saw that many students were already waiting excitedly. It took us only a few minutes to set up all the equipment and then everybody turned into busy-bees.

We separated the kitchen area into three sections - grilling chicken, frying hamburgers and making Nutella chocolate biscuits. Two parents were there to supervise and support us, making sure things were cooked properly and that the kids would not go home with bad stomachs. We thank them for their energy and support!

Then, before we knew it, the kids were there! They ran happily towards us (near the swimming pool) and turned left aiming for the changing room. After a while, I could hear the sound of the kids jumping in the water - "splash!""splash!" - and lots of hysterical laughter.

At that moment we were too busy to go and play; everyone looked like mad chefs cooking. And we needed to speed things up - the burgers' aroma was making our stomachs growl and our mouths water. However, the purpose was not to serve our stomachs. After all, it was the Klong Toei children's day out. After the Nutella sandwiches were ready (looking as yummy as ever), the sandwich team changed their jobs to putting pork on the bread.

The table was full of fried sausages,
grilled chicken and hamburgers as well as shrimp sticks. The children put their play time aside and ate seriously. Once they were full, the sound of splashing returned. They jumped back into the pool and floated around, loving every moment.

When they were too tired, we handed out donuts and ice-cream. It was about time to say goodbye. We took some pictures with them and off they went, smiling joyfully. It felt great to give them such a happy few hours, and I would like to thank all our pupils and parents who donated food and their time to allow others to have such a great morning.

Klong Toei visit us every half term. The next visit will be more special – not only will food and entertainment be provided, but the Lion Heart Society of Harrow will provide a doctor to examine the children and prescribe any necessary medication. Medication and follow up visits will be paid for by the Lion Heart society and Harrow parents.
