Stopping the motorcycle hooligans on our footpaths

Seen occasionally on the streets of Bangkok, but nowhere near often enough, are BMA officials flagging down and fining motorcyclists who use the sidewalks to beat the traffic.

Even though not empowered to the same degree as regular policemen, these local government workers do have jurisdiction over the city's pavements. We're talking about the uniformed guys who control the street vendors, making sure (in theory) that they adhere to the rules and regulations.

So it would be great to see them more regularly in action exercising their power to prevent motorcycle hooligans from speeding past startled pedestrians. Such is the selfish and coulnd't-care-less attitude of these motorcyclists that some have been known to actually hoot people to get out of their way. And they don't take kindly to pedestrians who point out that they are supposed to be on the road, not on the sidewalk.

Let's see more BMA pavement checkpoints. Well, at least as many police checkpoints currently on Bangkok's roads!
