Those executive salaries look very good to foreigners

Earlier this year, a human resources expert interviewed by this magazine suggested that an increasing number of local companies are considering engaging Thai executives to replace foreigners as a cheaper option. He said locals offer the same experience and skills for lower salaries.

Perhaps this fellow should reconsider his view, given the strenght of the Thai baht and how it presents an entirely different picture of the cost of foreign workers, particularly from places like the UK, where the average take-home salary of a mid-level executive is less then 1,500 pounds a month. At the current exchange rate of 46 baht to one UK pound, that translates as approximately 70,000 baht.

His own company issues a list of vacancies in Thai companies for people of similar age and experience as their UK counterparts - and in virtually every case, the salary being offered is significantly higher.

Not only is he therefore wrong in his assessment, but his company and its clients are arguably missing out on a pool of talent.

Let's face it, those salaries in the 150,000 to 200,000 baht a month bracket look very attractive to a large section of workers overseas.

Immigrant labour usually starts at the bottom end of the employment ladder. Maybe it's time to think again.
