Print’s not dead! And here’s proof… |

THERE’S no doubt about it, digital media is booming. Smartphones, Netbooks, and Tablet PCs with remote access to the internet are taking the world by storm and changing the way in which media is produced and assimilated. And with global information now available at the touch of a button, 24 hours a day, it’s no wonder that many media experts are predicting the death of traditional print media. But proof that there’s life in the old rag yet can be found right here in Thailand.
Today there are over 200 foreign-language newspapers, magazines and other periodicals such as journals and guides published legally in Thailand. This number changes constantly, and unlike Europe and America, where print media is in decline, here it’s on the rise.
American missionary Dr. Dan Beach Bradley founded the first newspaper in Siam in 1844. Called The Bangkok Recorder, it was published monthly in English and Thai. Fast forward to present day and there are now scores of periodicals printed in Thailand on a daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or longer basis.
A recent survey taken by BigChilli discovered 201 foreign-language publications printed locally, 96 of which are in English, 42 are bilingual, mostly in English/Thai, 32 in Japanese, 15 in Russian, six each in Chinese and German, two in Korean, and one each in French and Persian. Their circulations range from several hundred to many thousands of copies per issue.
Most are sold at newsstands and bookshops, while some are distributed free of charge at hotels, restaurants and supermarkets frequented by foreigners.
It should be noted that there are many publications, especially magazines, whose covers are fully or partly in English but whose entire content is in Thai.
Some of these are often wrapped in plastic to prevent people from reading inside the shop. In such a case non-Thai speakers should ask the seller whether the publication is in English or Thai before purchasing.
A wide variety of foreign-language periodicals imported from other countries are also available. These are much more expensive than locally printed publications.
In addition, one company in Bangkok specializes in same-day editions of newspapers from more than 90 countries, in 40 languages, which are laser-printed in an A3 format with the same content and layout as the original.
Finally, there are a few periodicals published here without legal permits, especially by exile groups from Burma. These are mostly mailed to their readers in Thailand and abroad. (SCROLL DOWN FOR LIST).
