Bringing the Irish Spirit to Khaosan Road

Khun Damrongsak Yungprakhon, Executive Manager of Mulligans Irish Bar on Khaosan Road, talks about his job and what makes the 24-hour pub so special

When did you join Mulligans and what were you doing before?

I joined Mulligans four years ago. An old friend of my mine, whom I met at O’Reillys Irish Pub on Silom Road, asked me to work with him. I have been working in the hospitality and services business for over 15 years, including time spent working for O’Reilly’s, Dubliner, Delaney’s Pattaya, and Carnival Cruise Lines. So when my friend asked me to join the Mulligans project, I said yes immediately.

So you’ve always been Executive Manager of the pub?

I started off at Mulligans as a Project Manager and I was given a month to transform the property, a former-Thai restaurant, into the Irish pub and restaurant it is today. I was in charge of the design concept, recruiting staff, and creating the food and cocktail menus. I only recently became the pub’s Executive Manager/business partner. The title doesn’t mean anything to me, though, as I have been taking care of everything since the beginning.

What are your main responsibilities?

I am responsible for everything, really. When I’m not managing the budget and organizing marketing, you’ll see me in the bar making sure everything is organized and flowing like it should be. I never consider myself as just a business partner. I always think of myself as an owner who wants to give good service to his customers. So, when it comes to work, I give much more than just my job description.

And this isn’t only the case at Mulligans. The Buddy Group, which owns Mulligans, also owns another pub and restaurant on Khaosan Road called 999 West and I am also in charge of making sure things run smoothly there. Operating two venues might sound like a big workload, but I have a good team of staff who I can rely on.

What sets Mulligans apart from the competition?

Mulligans is the only 24-hour pub in Khaosan area. We are an Irish-inspired bar offering many international beers and a long list of innovative and exclusive cocktails, many of which are my very own creations. We have an extensive choice of international pub-style food and Thai eats, and every night we have live music and we host three of the city’s hottest pub-playing bands - ‘City Beat’, ‘The Universal,’ and former KPN contestants Kong and Nok. The vibrant mix of international rock and pop hits, new and old, means there is something for every taste.

What kind of crowd does the pub attract?

Considering the location we do pull in a large crowd of tourists and expats. But we also get lots of local Thais, mostly middle aged. And we even have several Thai celebrities as regulars.

Does your restaurant have any interesting promotions in the coming months?

Throughout September, for the Rugby World Cup 2011, we will be offering special deals on beers. Heineken starts 110+ baht per pint and Guinness is 195+ baht per pint. We also have special prizes to give away such as free accommodation at our sister business, Buddy Oriental Riverside Pakkred.
