IT may have been out of the limelight for a while due to internal upgrades and a slew of attention-grabbing new hotel openings, but there’s no question the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is now firmly back in focus with a typically grand and stylish flourish. The reason for this resurgence is a recently completed multi-million dollar renovation of the historic Authors’ and Garden Wings, which has returned Thailand’s oldest and most iconic hotel to the pedestal it occupied for many decades. |
A comprehensive redesign of this famous riverside property’s original 140-year-old building and adjoining wing will leave guests and rivals in no doubt that the Oriental is back at its most beguiling.
Thanks to a major room reconfiguration, the legendary Authors’ Wing now boasts the spectacular Grand Royal Suite, one of the largest and most beautiful facilities of its kind in Thailand.
Occupying all 600 sq m of the wing’s first floor, the Grand Royal Suite has a private elevator and incorporates the one-bedroom, 315 sq m Royal Suite as well as the adjoining two-bedroom Ambassador >> Suite (165 sq m), along with three further separate guest rooms for family and entourage.

In addition to a dining room for 12 guests, the suite features a stunning light-filled Victorian-inspired glass conservatory offering relaxed lounge seating and dining for six guests. The building’s original open balcony has been restored to give guests views of the hotel’s gardens and the Chao Phraya River. The creative force behind these comprehensive changes is P49 Deesign, one of the country’s most renowned interior designers. Meanwhile, the hotel’s famous French fine dining restaurant Le Normandie has been given a new-look with a contemporary interpretation of its original design. | The Authors’ Lounge, a popular venue for afternoon tea, society weddings and elegant events, has also been restored to its classic late-nineteenth-century design and extended to include four salons named after famous authors who were guests of the hotel: Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Noël Coward and James Michener. “We are delighted to unveil the results of this far-reaching renovation as we celebrate our 140th year of delivering legendary hospitality,” said Amanda Hyndman, General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok. “The Authors’ and Garden Wings are the heart and soul of this historic property, and this comprehensive renovation has extended Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s unique urban resort environment, allowing guests to enjoy the extensive river frontage to its fullest.” www.mandarinoriental.com |
