“Master Chang” Tossaporn Sritula, a famous guru, offers tips for paying respect to the gods for the Year of the Golden Rat, “Usually, during the Chinese New Year, we will hear about Golden years such as Golden Pig or Golden Rooster. It’s just a catchy name, but those years are not really Golden years. However, this year is the Year of the Golden Rat and a real golden year because it’s the only Golden Rat year in 60 years. The Year of the Rat is also the first in the 12 Chinese zodiac signs, so it is a great opportunity to pay respect to holy beings for an auspicious beginning. For unlucky years, those born in the Year of the Horse may experience unlucky events, but this also affects those born in the Year of the Rat, Rooster and Rabbit. On this matter, in fact, unlucky could mean unexpected changes, and they can be good or bad. In Chinese culture, there’s a tradition to pay respect to the gods to bring good luck, and it starts on January 24, 2020 by paying respect to CaiShen, God of wealth, at 11pm. This year, the offering table should face the West and there should be auspicious fruits or desserts such as red cakes or items in a colour that matches the gold element like orange and golden yellow. Today, it is much easier to prepare offerings to pay respect to the gods and ancestors for the Chinese New Year. Modern people who want to continue the tradition and need convenience can enjoy easier options at Central Food Hall and Tops where there are ready-made offering sets as well as tips and tricks. The sets can be bought at the store or online to save time and ensure you get quality products.”
Celebrity Kamonporn Wongrukmit, an heiress to Nakornchai air, said, “My mother is of a Chinese descent, and my grandmother always taught her grandchildren to pay respect to the gods for the Chinese New Year. Today, I still do that - even though I am in the new generation, I see the importance of paying respect to my ancestors and gods. Today, it’s much easier to find offering items. Family Mart offers ready-to-eat meals that my family usually uses on our offering table. This is a great option for the new generation or those who do not have time to prepare food.”
Shawankorn Wanthanaphisitkul also keeps the Chinese New Year tradition alive. “My father’s side has Teochew blood - my grandparents moved here from China on a boat. We value the Chinese New Year traditions and we always wear new clothes in red for the Chinese New Year. The face must be clear and bright for this auspicious occasion, and as a beauty lover, for the Chinese New Year, I wear makeup that suits the occasion such as red lipstick and gold eyeshadow. I purchase these items at Matsumoto Kiyoshi where I go often and I’m also a member. For the Year of the Golden Rat, there are many amazing items to choose from.”
