MODEL MARKET-Upcycled Urban Space
Welcome to Bangkok’s first environmentally-conscience indoor/outdoor market, rocking foods from some of Bangkok’s favorite restaurants and bars, while, doing it’s part for the environment.
This place is making upcycling and recycling their focus while delivering a cool urban space to hang out. Bangkok’s best restaurants and bars have joined forces to create a fun marketplace focused on building an eco-friendly, sustainable outdoor venue in Thonglor Neighbour’s Sukhumvit soi 53.
Model Market is adorned with cool graffiti, fairy lights and upcycled metal sculptures. All furniture in the venue is recycled from defunct shops, shuttered restaurants and closed bars, across bangkok. Their red metal chairs are from closed pizza delivery companies, benches from an unopened restaurant concepts, funky decor from the now shuttered ‘Bangkok Betty’s’. Even the craft beer bar, set up by their partner, “Bootleg Brothers”, is made from recycled wood from past events like ‘Wonderfruit’, and adorned by leftover ammunition boxes. The recycling and upcycling idea is permeated throughout the venue, including the land itself, upcycled from a pending real estate development.
Plastic straws, utensils and non-biodegradable items are banned from the venue and all foods will be composted through a sustainability organization. The venue is teaming up with local recycle and sustainability organizations, to create an “eco-market”, where people can come, drop-off and pick-up donated books, toys, recycled clothes, and furniture. Model Market plans on having weekday Farmer’s Markets, clothes swap events, upcycling workshops and eventually a donated goods depot for people bitten by the “Marie Kondo” bug.
The venue on Sukhumvit soi 53 is also pet friendly, making the space one of the few places to bring your little pooch. Providing your poochies are leashed and attended. Model Market also houses a recycling studio by “The Remaker”; a leading brand for the fashion industry using discarded materials upcycled to create new items like rubber and leather bags, jackets, shoes etc. The Remaker studio has a fun bicycle powered juice maker, demonstrating it’s ingenuity. A real hit with the kids.
