HOOQ – the largest Video on Demand service in Southeast Asia – will premiere 5 original selected screenplays as pilot episodes on the platform coming 1 March 2018. This is the second year the HOOQ Filmmakers Guild has developed and commissioned 5 pilots wherein the best performing pilot will be commissioned into a full series on the platform.
The pilots that will premiere on HOOQ are Klenix (Indonesia), Babi! (Malaysia), She’s a Terrorist and I Love Her (Singapore), Lucky Girl (Thailand) and Split Second (Thailand).
Jennifer Batty, Chief Content Officer of HOOQ, said, “We are so excited to present the second season of pilots produced by the HOOQ Filmmakers Guild! It has been a rigorous process in selecting the top 5 scripts to be developed into pilots and now it will be even more difficult to make a decision to commission only 1 series! It has been a pleasure working with the team of filmmakers and I would like to underscore HOOQ’s commitment to support the talented filmmakers across Asia in 2019”.
Launched in June 2017, the HOOQ Filmmakers Guild is an annual initiative designed to seek out film talents in Asia that have great ideas but lack the opportunity to bring them to life on screen. Each of the above 5 screenplays received USD 30,000 to produce the pilot episode. The best out of these pilot episodes, decided by HOOQ subscribers and a star-studded judging panel consisting of the top film talents around Asia, will be commissioned into a full series produced and aired on HOOQ.
The inaugural HOOQ Filmmakers Guild pilots have gone on to win various awards including the Grand Prize for Best Television Pilot at the 22nd Annual Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF), Best Comedy Programme for Indonesia and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Singapore at the inaugural Asian Academy Creative Awards.
The pilots have just been judged by 5 esteemed filmmakers from Asia, namely Indonesia’s Mouly Surya and Joko Anwar, Philippines’ Manet Dayrit and Agot Isidro, as well as Thailand’s Adisorn Tresirikasem, and Banjong Pisanthanakun. In addition to professional judging, viewership numbers will also be taken into consideration and will also be factored in before the winner is selected.
Thai judge Banjong Pisanthanakun, renowned for the commercially successful box office topper Shutter, commented, “I am privileged to have had the opportunity to be part of this judging panel. Today, we’ve witnessed some truly inspirational, high calibre content from budding filmmakers that represents some of the incredible talent that Southeast Asia has to offer.”

Fellow Thai judge Adisorn Tresirikasem said, “I feel that all of the finalists this year have exceeded expectations. These young filmmakers are really pushing the boundaries when it comes to engaging with audiences via the medium of film. I am confident that viewers at home will be just as captivated in these pilots as I was.”
“This is my second year on the judging panel and I continue to be blown away by the high standard of submissions. In 2018, we had a rich abundance of great pilot shows, and this year is no different. Southeast Asia is booming with creative flair and I am truly proud to be part of a process that gives aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their incredible talents and original work.” said Indonesian judge Mouly Surya, director of critically acclaimed and award-winning film Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts.
Award-winning fellow Indonesian judge Joko Anwar added, “I have no doubt that audiences from across Southeast Asia will be as captivated by these pilot episodes as I was. This is a real testament to Southeast Asia’s bustling film and creative industries.”
Filipino judge Agot Isidro, award-winning actress adds, “These pilot episodes are a true testament to impassioned filmmakers across Asia. They have been daring in their approach, taking inspiration from Asian culture and social nuances to tell compelling stories that would resonate across the region.”
Judging was based on the relevance and potential appeal to Asian audiences, demonstrable creativity in storytelling and most of all, a well told Asian story with an original point of view.
Fellow Filipino judge Manet Dayrit, an award-winning veteran in the Filipino film industry, was impressed by the entries, “It’s both inspiring and humbling to be part of a process like this. What these entrants have developed in such a short space of time is nothing short of incredible. They’ve truly captured the spirit of Asian storytelling on film and we cannot wait for audiences to see”.
