The Standard is proud to present “Shadow Theatre”, an exhibition by Jaime Hayon, visionary artist and designer selected for the interior design of The Standard’s Asia flagship hotel in Bangkok at Mahanakhon. The exhibition will take place during Bangkok Design Week 2022, 5–13 February, in the Chai Phatthanasilp Building.

With a series of works born of a distinct approach to creativity and design, Jaime Hayon’s exhibition explores his unique and intriguing vision of a “circus fantasy”. Art pieces are presented as an immersive “theater” experience inspired by the age-old Thai theater of “Nang Talung”, a traditional style of shadow puppetry. The vast space of the Chaipattanasin Building in Charoenkrung is where the audience will find themselves immersed in a larger-than-life theatrical landscape of vibrant design and creativity. The ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary through a contemporary interpretation of folklore and tradition.

“Shadow Theatre” is a recreation of Hayon’s collection of paintings done throughout the years, where the characters and elements come to life in three-dimensional form. “I wanted to use these simplistic yet mesmerizing shapes in a way that creates motion and movement to illustrate and express the fantastical world of my art” said Hayon of his imaginative exhibition. Dream-like Surrealist-inspired visuals captivate with a sense of playfulness and are perfectly complemented by music curated by The Standard. This is just a taste of what is to come at Mahanakhon, in the world of “The Standard x Jaime Hayon”.

Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon was born in Madrid in 1974. His artistic vision was first fully exposed in the ‘Mediterranean Digital Baroque’ and ‘Mon Cirque’ installations. These collections put Jaime at the forefront of a new wave that blurred the lines between art, decoration, and design, driving a renaissance in finely crafted, intricate objects within the context of contemporary design culture. In 2001, Hayon established the Hayon Studio, which now has offices in Italy, Spain and Japan, where he continues to explore new and expressive artforms while maintaining a deep respect for artisan skills, finely crafted detail and a passion for play.

The Standard Bangkok Design Week is a free event that will take place during 5–13 February 2022, from 11am to 9pm, at the Chai Phatthanasilp Building, Charoenkrung Road.
