The COS Autumn Winter 2019 collection explores two key concepts, bound by the exploration of scale.

A brutalist approach based on the strong, angular lines of monumental architecture is complemented by a tranquil mood of escaping to nature – drawing the manmade and natural worlds together as one.

Creating a collection with contrasting forms and sensual richness, firm structure and soft fluidity intertwine to form exaggerated proportions, while natural and innovative materials create architectural silhouettes.

New methods of design turn to the delicacy of construction and deconstruction, exploring voluminous proportion and creating impactful scale. Slanted shoulder angles create bold and sculptural forms in menswear; cuffs, straps and belts add versatility while obtaining a relaxed fit. Womenswear pieces appear uncomplicated and exposed in an outward-facing simplicity, emphasizing a single bold feature.

The season’s colour palette references the two key themes, presenting a foundation of industrial greys complemented by an array of softer shades, such as stone and oatmeal, bringing a subtle lightness to a winter palette, warmed by deep rust and plum.

The collection explores traditional garments, redefined to focus on detail and craftmanship.

Kilt-inspired pleating appears in both concepts – womenswear explores a skirt crafted from a lightweight fabric to allow for movement, while denser qualities such as hardboiled wool also appear, in the form of a dress with the same statement pleats. In menswear, the kilt references a classic, utilitarian apron, styled with black trousers and the quintessential white shirt for a refreshed, modern look.
Traditional yet reworked pieces form a distinct theme this season; necklines are tailored to adjust, fits are relaxed and lengthened, while altered waistbands allow a straight or more defined waist. Padded outerwear provides dual functionality - removable sections form alternative looks whilst offering cocoonlike protection from the elements.

A range of accessories bring a new perspective; bags are textured with padded surfaces that explore mass and volume, while perforated surfaces bring added tactility. Construction is highlighted once again; asymmetric elements and raw, clean cuts feature throughout. Key functional pieces include; a quilted leather handbag with functional double handles, lace-up brogues with a creeper sole for women and square-toe leather boots for men. Jewellery embodies the sense of the collection, playing on rounded volumes. Earrings, hairclips and necklaces are organically shaped and soft in shades of plum and dark rust.

The childrenswear collection takes reference from the overall seasonal inspirations with relaxed and rounded shapes informing the silhouette and mood of the season. Padded and tactile materials form the basis of jackets, knitwear and dresses with playfulness and functionality at the heart.

COS launched on London’s Regent Street in March 2007. Offering collections for women, men and children, pieces are designed to last beyond the season and incorporate reinvented classics and modern silhouettes. The brand is run from a central London head-quarter comprised of designers, pattern-cutters, buyers as well as architects, sales and marketing. COS has stores across Europe, Asia-Pacific, North America and the Middle East and retails online at cosstores.com.
