Pagoda Chinese Restaurant will transport your taste buds to the ancient city of Hangzhou this December, with its new special signature dish: Golden Chicken.
A traditional recipe from eastern China’s Zhejiang province, this spectacular culinary centerpiece is often enjoyed on auspicious occasions.

Famously difficult to cook due to its complex techniques and delicate balance of flavours, Golden Chicken should only be attempted by highly-skilled and experienced chefs – such as the culinary experts at Pagoda Chinese Restaurant! A whole chicken is stuffed with mushrooms, Jinhua ham, scallops and Chinese herbs such as goji and ginkgo, then wrapped in lotus leaves and baked in a Chinese bread crust. It takes about an hour to bake, so guests are advised to order it in advance.

Legend has it that in days gone by, a poor beggar who had nothing to eat stole a chicken from a rich man’s house. Afraid of being caught, he wrapped the chicken with lotus leaves and covered it in a layer of clay, before throwing it on a fire. When he returned, he broke off the clay and found that the chicken was perfectly cooked! This became such a popular way of cooking chicken that it eventually became the food of the Chinese emperor.

Nowadays, Golden Chicken (or “Beggar’s Chicken” as it is sometimes known) is used to celebrate important occasions such as birthdays and festivals. Traditionally, a wooden hammer is tapped three times to break the bread, before the food is blessed and the steaming meat and filling is finally revealed.

Golden Chicken will be available from 1-31 December 2021 (lunch or dinner, Wednesday-Sunday) at Pagoda Chinese Restaurant, on the fourth floor of Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park. Half a chicken is priced at THB 688++, and a whole chicken is available for THB 1,288++.
