Jazz, an influential genre of music that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is celebrated for its rich history and vibrant expressions. The "Jazz Icons" exhibition features photographs from key jazz locales including Paris and Southern France, as well as various iconic sites in the United States. Renowned musicians such as Kenny Clarke, Louis Armstrong, Ornette Coleman, and Dave Brubeck are among the luminaries captured in these striking images.
This extraordinary showcase presents a rare opportunity to view a private collection of jazz photographs from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Curated with a deep appreciation for the art form, Michel Bohbot's collection provides an intimate look at the legends of jazz, preserving their legacy and celebrating their contributions to music history.
Ambassador Michel Bohbot, a former UNESCO diplomat, collector, and Art Historian, shared his insights on jazz's impact in Europe and Asia post-World War II, stating, "Jazz music achieved immediate and total success in Europe and Asia after World War II. Concerts, clubs, vinyl records, and magazines played significant roles in its popularity. Much like other art forms, jazz musicians became idols, and fans were eager to see their faces, which were frequently published in newspapers. This European collection features photos from the sixties, seventies, and eighties, capturing moments from festivals, recording sessions, and live concerts. Jazz musicians often have striking and expressive faces, like those of Dave Brubeck, Kenny Clarke, and Cannonball Adderley, which reflect a range of emotions from joy to sorrow. These portraits allow us to understand and feel the musicians' personalities even before hearing their music, providing a complete and sensitive vision of these extraordinary jazz giants."
Sammy Carolus, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit, expressed his appreciation to Ambassador Michel Bohbot for selecting the hotel as the venue for this remarkable exhibition. "We are thrilled to host Michel Bohbot's exceptional 'JAZZ ICONS' collection, featuring photographs of legendary jazz musicians from around the world," he remarked. "This exhibition highlights our dedication to promoting the arts and providing our guests with unique cultural experiences. We are proud to play a role in enriching Bangkok's vibrant art scene and offering a prestigious platform for showcasing such outstanding works."
