River City Bangkok with its Contemporary Art Space on the 2nd floor was officially opening “Our Popula(ra)tion” on Tuesday, April 9th. This group exhibition features 5 talented Thai artists - Dow Wasiksiri, Kanakorn Kachacheeva, Krit Ngamsom (mixed media art), Tawan Wattuya, and Thesis Areepipatkul.
Curated by Suesbang Sangwachirapiban, each piece of work is inspired by observing thoughts and diverse behaviors of people in the 21st century.
The title, Our Popula(ra)tion, is named after 3 words. “Pop” means temporariness. “Popular” reflects the taste of the people at large. “Population” is the number of people in the society. All is ensembled in their works; Dow Wasiksiri (photograph), Kanakorn Kachacheeva (acrylic painting), Krit Ngamsom (mixed media art), Tawan wattuya (water colour painting), and Thesis Areepipatkul (acrylic painting). They are translated into 5 key messages which are Popularism, Neo-Colonialism, Déjà Vu, Ignorance, and Rebellion.

Dow Wasiksiri (photograph)
This photographer presents a series of 8 photos. He was invited by Indonesia to be an Artist in Residence and selected hundreds of archive photos from the Tropenmuseum Amsterdam in Holland. As a professional photographer, he applied his keen photoshop technique by portraying himself in conversation with people in colonialism in order to tell them some important current situations.
Thesis Areepipatkul (acrylic painting)
This young with his Bias (Methology) paintings are mocking some famous characters or real situations happened in the society. It becomes a study on positive and negative sides. Audiences are independent to interpret and judge according to their individual opinion.
Tawan Wattuya (water colour painting)
This artist was creating water colour paintings on paper in 2014. Exhibited in Australia, they are the sequel of uniform series. He came up with an idea to paint Thai uniform so he was researching on internet and selecting some inspiring photos.
Krit Ngamsom (mixed media art)
This contemporary artist was creating ready-made artworks. Once exhibited in Hong Kong, each piece of art makes an awareness on political situations in Thailand, government’s policies, and political propagandas. The exhibition is held during the general election in 2019 so he selected this series to raise up some important issues. For instance, Time Machine is a collage of past situations. Each toylike art is interactive and narrative so it alleviates its dramatic message.
Kanakorn Kachacheeva (acrylic painting)
His set of artworks were exhibited in the Bangkok University. The merry-go-round was a reminder of childhood. The background is like a vintage photo booth in the studio. The female model is not specific but representative of young generation earning a living with old belief. The artist is trying to narrate stories about belief such as antlers as a symbol of hope. To put it simply, this artwork is contemporary. Headphone symbolizes a comfort zone of people in modern society.
