As Associate Partner of Art Basel since 2013, Audemars Piguet is delighted to announce its latest lounge concept to be presented at Art Basel Hong Kong, Basel, and Miami Beach in 2019.

Imagined by Brooklyn-based sculptural artist and designer Fernando Mastrangelo, the Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer’s immersive new space in the Art Basel Collectors’ Lounge will transport visitors to its home in the Swiss Jura Mountains.

Known for his sculptural objects that interlink art and design using everyday materials such as salt, sand and cement, Mastrangelo’s new lounge concept, titled The Vallée will evoke Audemars Piguet’s home in the Swiss Jura Mountains through seamless gradients of tones and textures. The space, inspired by the Vallée de Joux and composed of repurposed and crushed elements of its landscape, will express the purity of nature and the passing of time. By deconstructing and reconstructing nature and playing with time’s geological manifestations, Mastrangelo will put past and present in conversation.

As Fernando Mastrangelo explains: “I wanted to consider time not only in a linear sense, the passage of time, but also in a geological sense by drawing a parallel between the time it took for the land in the Vallée de Joux to be formed with the time it takes to create an Audemars Piguet watch. In learning about Audemars Piguet and the company’s history, I am excited at the chance to align with a brand that shares my core beliefs.”
The stratified wall of the lounge will appear as a disassembled expanse of the Vallée de Joux’s Combe Noire quarries. It will also display five intrinsic components of Audemars Piguet’s latest watch collection – gold, brass, aventurine, sapphire glass and iron – reminiscent of its rooted history in the region and the intricate process of Haute Horlogerie. Mastrangelo’s exploration of the Vallée de Joux’s geological formation continues with the chandelier of crushed glass, referencing the limestone stalactites in the Swiss Vallorbe Caves. The artisan workspace made of original boulders will invite onlookers to discover Audemars Piguet watchmakers’ savoir-faire, mirrored by Mastrangelo’s craftsmanship and design.
The lounge will include a smaller area designed for visitors to relax and experience a disconnected moment in the Vallée de Joux at sunset. This area’s architectural design uniting the round and the octagonal is inspired by the complex geometry of the Manufacture’s new watch collection Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet.

Olivier Audemars, Vice President of the Board of Directors, rejoices over this new collaboration: “We are delighted to collaborate with Fernando Mastrangelo on our new Art Basel lounge concept. Mastrangelo surprises us with his innovative ideas, blurring the lines between contemporary art, design and craft. His latest design encapsulates the true nature of the brand and reflects Audemars Piguet’s commitment to creativity and innovation.”
Mastrangelo’s design will travel to Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach throughout 2019 and will continue its evolution in 2020.

“To break the rules, you must first master them.”
