For the Balenciaga Summer 19 runway, artist Jon Rafman collaborated with creative director Demna Gvasalia to create an immersive video installation titled The Ride Never Ends.
The collection show took place inside a cylindrical, LED screen-paneled tunnel. The display seamlessly curved around the entire interior from floor to ceiling, creating an all-encompassing virtual dreamscape.
The video, directed by Jon Rafman, starts with the sudden appearance of a Blue Screen of Death. The familiar color of an error screen invokes panic—only to be washed away by digitally-rendered liquid substances. The journey continues through eerie digital ecosystems, alien landscapes, and late-stage technofetishist civilizations on the verge of collapse. Space-time folds in on itself as the video dazzles and transfixes the viewer.
Jon Rafman (born in 1981 in Montreal, Canada) is an artist and filmmaker known for his explorations of the impact of technology on contemporary society and the human psyche. Rafman's work has been exhibited internationally and was the subject of recent solo shows at Sprueth Magers, Berlin (2017), and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2016).
The Ride Never Ends debuts on September 30 at the Balenciaga Summer 19 runway show in Paris.
