It is our great honour to have the Chinese prolific master Han Meilin whose works are versatile, yet well-known for his brush paintings to present a collection of his 300 works at Siam Paragon and China Cultural Center in Bangkok. The exhibition presents a collection of Chinese brush paintings based on the concept of “Shengxiao” or the Chinese zodiac which is a classification scheme that assigns an animal and its reputed attributes to each year in a repeating 12-year cycle. It is a popular and ever-growing cultural phenomenon and tradition in China and has inspired numerous artistic creations embodying the national spirit and good wishes of the Chinese. Also on display is a collection of brass sculptures signifying warmth and exquisiteness.
Han Meilin, a representative figure of contemporary Chinese artists, is known to base his artworks on the Chinese culture and the increasingly globalized world. With insightful analysis of the shengxiao culture in China, Han captures the zeitgeist of the Chinese with his shengxiao-themed artistic creation. His artworks are aesthetic and full of visual impact while appealing to the public taste. They often depict moments that are most ordinary, innocent, relatable and natural in daily life, but somehow, at the same time, mirror the ideal life people are longing for. They deliver a message repeatedly: all beings are equal and all things on earth have a soul. They rise above the ancient wisdom of “Man and Nature in one”, and place more emphasis on the consciousness of the subject and on “harmonious development” based on the law of nature.
With the cultural collaborations and exchanges between different countries worldwide, Chinese zodiac culture has spread outward internationally. In Thailand, the order of the zodiac varies from China due to different living environments and geographical conditions. The exhibition to be held in Bangkok is as a continuation of the Han Meilin: Chinese Zodiac Art Exhibition held in the Palace Museum during the Spring Festival of 2019. Through the “zodiac”, which is a common cultural symbol of the Chinese nation and an artistic language unique to Han Meilin, the two cities, Beijing and Bangkok, which are thousands of miles apart, are linked together to awaken the common cultural memory and artistic moving.
Please come to appreciate the aesthetics of Chinese artworks during the Chinese New Year celebration at “Han Meilin’s Zodiac Art Exhibition” from January 21 to 27, 2020 at Fashion Hall on the first floor of Siam Paragon.
