The Samutprakarn International Ladies Club goes above and beyond to help others, even if it means spending countless hours to create an English-Thai cookbook

ฺBRINGING together the expat ladies in Bangkok and beyond, Samutprakarn International Ladies Club (SILC) was born in 1992 from two expat ladies enjoying their time together by the pool. SILC was initially created to bring together all the expat ladies (and local ones) in the Samutprakarn area. More than just a social club, SILC provides its members and various communities with support and meaningful activities.
This friendly and active bunch of ladies is no longer limited to only those living in Samutprakarn, although the club began that way. Currently comprised of expat and local ladies from 26 nationalities, the club provides a wide range of activities for its members including coffee mornings, lunches, book clubs, trips to explore the city, and getting involved with many welfare projects.
Chris Rajakarier is a member of SILC who, like most expat wives, moved to Thailand because her husband landed a position here nine years ago. What surprised her the most about Thailand was how friendly, receptive and kind Thais are.
Working as a Welfare Coordinator for SILC on a volunteer basis is like a fulltime job for Chris. With a passion to help make people’s lives better, this opportunity allows her to extend a helping hand to others.
The group is involved in supporting a wide range of charity groups and foundations including FORDEC, The Mercy Centre, Heavenly Homes, Noh Bo Academy, J Square Bangkok, Sister Joan, Urban Neighbours of Hope, Place of Grace, Home of Grace, Nightlight, Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group and the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Care, and Christian Care Foundation for Children with Disabilities (CCD).
Their latest project was the bilingual Cookbook, a comprehensive collection of 101 international recipes from over 26 nationalities. Collected from the members of SILC and friends, the ladies were more than happy to participate in the project. Tasks were divided among the members to collect, write and format, as well as proofread, translate and coordinate with the printer. The project coordinators were Chris Rajakarier, Shirley Tan and Sudeshna Srivastava and it was a great team effort from over 20 members.
SILC recently launched the brand new second Edition of the “Bilingual Bites” Cookbook, and held the book launch at Anantara Riverside Hotel Bangkok and was sold at the annual SILC Bazaar which garnered them a great response from the public. As the cookbook is in Thai and English, it is a must have for expats and locals who enjoy cooking and a passion to help the underprivileged.
All proceeds from the sales of the cookbook will be donated to the health, development and education of children in Thailand.
