Dr. Yoshiyuki Sankai, the President and CEO of Cyberdyne, announced the inauguraDon of medical cyborg-robot rental services for the first Dme in Thailand to treat paDents who have suffered from serious diseases that affect their motor abiliDes such as stroke, spinal cord injury and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The debut took place in the Advanced Medical RoboDcs Symposium 2019 hosted by Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Science or TCELS under the Ministry of Science and Technology and Mahidol University on March 15-16 at the Sukosol hotel.

This debut followed aWer Cyberdyne’s conDnued success with improving motor abiliDes of paDents in many counDes such as the US, Germany, Malaysia and Japan. It is used by major players such as Brooks RehabilitaDon Hospital in Florida, US, which is known to be one of the naDon’s largest inpaDent rehabilitaDon hospitals.

Cyberdyne provides treatment services with its products to improve and regenerate the physical funcDons of its paDents. HAL Lower Limb Type will be used for paDents with lower-body paralysis. For paDents who have problems controlling their trunk, ge^ng up or maintaining a seated posture, HAL Lumbar Type will be used. HAL Single Joint Type will be used for paDents with problems moving their wrist, elbow, knee or ankle joints.
Cyberdyne’s HAL is installed with a hybrid control system that allows its users to choose the robot’s control modes between movement based on the paDent’s moDon intent (Cybernic Voluntary Control) or based on algorithms processed by arDficial intelligence (Cybernic Autonomous Control). Thus, Cyberdyne’s robots are considered cyborg type due to this capacity to link the moDon intent that is reflected in the signals obtained from sensors aaached to the paDent’s skin surface (Bio Electrical Signal) and the assistance provided by the robot’s systems. This process tries to recreate the normal interacDon between the body and the brain, which is key to reestablishing and maintaining meaningful synapDc connecDons in the nervous system. HAL is the only cyborg-type robot whose claim to improve motor funcDon even when the robot is not worn was approved by the US FDA. While the outcome varies for each paDent, some have been able to regain the ability to walk and become independent from the need for nursing or day care, while the majority of others showed significant improvements in their physical funcDons.

Cyberdyne is in the process of obtaining medical device approval in Thailand, and once that is completed, Cyberdyne plans to rent its products to hospitals or rehabilitaDon clinics. Zignature RoboDcs (ZR) will be Cyberdyne’s official representaDve in Thailand and can be reached at 02-115-8981 during its office hours or at admin@zignature.co.th.
