“Err” is an affirmative Thai word – a casual and playful equivalent to a “yes” or “ok” – that is used strictly among close friends. So, what you can expect from Err Urban Rustic Thai is a relaxing, sincere, and (slightly) mischievous culinary experience with no hidden agenda and delicious, down-to-earth Thai menus crafted by Chefs Bo and Dylan of bo.lan fame. The concept Err Urban Rustic Thai was born from the idea to serve authentic, common Thai dishes using more than 90 per cent organic ingredients. As true advocates for a sustainable approach and organic farming, Chefs Bo and Dylan combine their extensive connection with organic produce providers and deep knowledge of Thai cuisine to create high-quality Thai dishes and bar snacks with authentic tastes – and offered at affordable prices. |
While these dishes are well-known, they are not something most Thais would cook themselves at home, or even know how to cook, especially in this day and age where almost everything is mass-produced and readily available. Err Urban Rustic Thai’s menu then is also a homage to the heritage of traditional Thai cuisine and the chefs’ attempt to preserve old cooking techniques and flavours of simple, everyday Thai dishes.
The food
The food menu comprises a series of bar snacks, entrees, and classic Thai dishes from all regions, prepared with organic ingredients and seasonal produce where applicable.
Highlights include the crunchy and addictive Nang Kai Tod, which is deep-fried whole chicken skin served with homemade tangy and spicy sriracha sauce, and Naem, savoury bites originating from the north of Thailand that use organic pork and no preservatives to give each bite a natural sour taste. Other snacks include Sai Krok Isaan, Isaan-style round sausages cured with organic gaba rice; Grilled Skewers; and a choice of intriguing Pickles and spicy salads.
Authentic Thai tastes can be found in dishes like Geng Kiew Wan Kai Ban (green curry of chicken on the bone with all the best bits), which is not overly sweet like many modern recipes. Instead of canned cream, the chefs use freshly squeezed coconut milk, homemade chilli paste, and assorted chicken offal to recreate the rich, creamy, and balanced curry the way it was prepared in the old days.
Other recommended dishes include Ma Keua Yao (braised minced pork with eggplant on steamed egg custard), Tom Kamin Kai Ban (spicy soup of chicken with turmeric), Pad Hoi Prik Pao (stir-fried mussels with chilli jam and Thai basil), and Pad Gra Pao Nua (stir-fried minced beef with holy basil and deep-fried egg). Diners can pair their selections with organic Khao Hom Mali 105 white rice, various varieties of brown rice sourced from organic farms in Thailand, and Kanom Jeen (rice noodles) made with organic rice flour from Suphan Buri.
The drinks
Thai spirits take centre stage at the bar, which offers 10 signature cocktails. Recommended is The Err, a tropical-style concoction demonstrating the eatery’s playfulness with its lip-smacking blend of Chalong Bay Rum, passion fruit, and fresh chilli. There are also Thai craft beers (on tap and bottled), a selection of sake, and organic and biodynamic wines. Non-alcoholic options include craft cola and sodas made from food scraps from the bar and the kitchen, and locally sourced teas and coffee.
The vibe
Casual and relaxing with ample natural light during the day, Err Urban Rustic Thai is a great choice for a business or casual meal, a fun dinner, or an early meeting place on a night out. The eatery also has a dedicated co-working space with ample power sockets and comfortable chairs.
Err Urban Rustic Thai is located on the second level of ASAI Sathorn on Sathorn Soi 12. It is open daily from 11.30-24.00. For more information and reservations, please contact [email protected] or call 02 231 8999.
