Global movement aims to shift Thailand towards a plant-based diet for sustainable agriculture, innovative natural food products, and healthier living.
Green Monday, a social venture originating and based in Hong Kong promoting sustainability and a plant-based lifestyle, officially launched in Thailand today.
Global movement shifts Thailand towards a plant-based diet In light of the imminent catastrophic consequences of climate change, Green Monday has been raising public awareness of the correlation between diet and the environment since its establishment in Hong Kong on 22 April (Earth Day) in 2012. Committed to championing a wholesome plant-based diet to reduce environmental footprint and improve public health, the movement successfully shifts 1.75 million Hong Kong people to adopt such a diet at least one day per week. The synergistic model of Green Monday is recognised internationally as it has been featured in Forbes, Bloomberg and CNN. The movement has launched in Singapore and Taiwan recently while China will be the next after the launch in Thailand.
Mr David Yeung, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Green Monday, was awarded Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the World Economic Forum/the Schwab Foundation in September 2018.
“Food & Agriculture is what Thailand has always been known for. There has also been a long history of Thailand being a Buddhist country and that vegetarianism is deeply ingrained in the Thai culture. That’s why I am particularly excited about the launch of Green Monday movement as well as the many exciting global plant-based food innovations in Thailand. We believe this is a milestone that connects Thailand’s cultural roots to a wholesome sustainable future,” David said.
“From a Food Innovation standpoint, Beyond Meat is taking the world by storm and we know many in Thailand have been eagerly waiting for its arrival. Meanwhile, OmniMeat is a perfect match with the Thai cuisine. I think both meat-eaters AND vegans/vegetarians will be impressed with the offerings at many of our partner hotels and restaurants, from the Beyond Burger to Pad Kra Pao!” He continued.

Ramita Mahapreukpong “Gypso”, a renowned actress in Thailand, adopts a flexitarian diet and she loves the idea of Green Monday that encourages people to rethink their food choices and to refine the current way of living so that we can all have a future. “It’s not about forcing people to change and condemning them for not being perfect about it. But it is about letting people know that there is a better way, a better us waiting. And we can meet those versions of us through living better if we wish to do so. There’s freedom, information and options available to support us along the way. Starting with that one small step at a time, with that one green day a week. With those simple day-to-day choices we make, we’re really changing the world.” Gypso said. Food Tech innovation for infinite culinary possibilities The international restaurant programme was rolled out first by Green Monday in an attempt to facilitate restaurants to launch a plant-based menu in addition to their original menus. Michelin-starred Chef & 5-Star Hotel Executive Chef join hands for launching plant- based innovative menu
Green Monday encourages chefs to create authentic plant-based dishes by introducing sustainable, nutritious and innovative food 2.0 ingredients, including Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger as well as Beyond Sausage, non-dairy cheese by Daiya and OmniMeat invented by Right Treat, the latest food innovation venture of Green Monday. It has been proven a huge success in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Taiwan, with over 100 well-known hospitality groups and restaurants incorporating the ingredient in their dishes.
You & Mee at Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and Baan Thai Family Recipe Restaurant have been the first two F&B outlets to launch OmniMeat since July and it proved to be a big hit. “The reason why I chose OmniMeat is because it’s sustainable, it’s delicious and it’s good for the planet,” Michelin Starred Chef Thitid Tassanakajohn, aka Chef Ton, said. “People are consuming more plant-based food items. Consumers like having more than one option without having to give up choice. I see our plant-based meat products as a supplement to our existent menu items, not as a replacement. Now people don't have to give up eating their pad ka prao, larb, and tom yam just because they feel like having plant- based food for that meal,” Executive Chef of Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, Chef Markus Zuck remarked.
OmniMeat Retail Pack is also available at Central In addition to partnering with restaurants, Green Monday aims to make plant-based home cooking much easier by introducing food 2.0 retail product to Bangkok. OmniMeat retail pack will be available at Central Food Hall from 28 Sep 2019.
