Unique Christmas tree reminds that not everyone is cut from the same cloth!
Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok presents “Threads of Joy” this holiday season, a unique Christmas tree that is a true homage to local Thai culture, contemporary art and festive spirit. The five-meter-high structure, displayed in the hotel lobby from 25 November 2023 to 7 January 2024, mimics the shape of a grand Christmas tree but is made entirely of fabric and textile waste, such as cloth labels and yarn-thread waste from clothing factories / tailor shops.
“Threads of Joy” is aptly named: stunningly beautiful despite – or maybe in spite of -- its imperfections. This Christmas work of art attests the concept that life doesn’t have to be flawless to be brilliant and that happiness comes in different shapes and forms often in the most unexpected ways – there’s always a reason to count one’s blessings, or at least threading.
With this project, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok continues to push and blur traditional norms for new and optimistic perspectives. It partnered with Touché Bangkok to create the tree out of upcycled fashion material, including yarns from waste that were spun by hand, especially for this undertaking and designed to complement the existing textile arts on display in the lobby. “Threads of Joy”. The result is a Christmas tree masterpiece whose diverse textures and textiles with bright, bold colours, spread cheerful vibes throughout Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok’s world-famed lobby.
Touché was born under the Touchable Bangkok brand, a company that focuses on the ethos of upcycling with the goal of reducing waste from the fashion industry in combination with local handicraft production from Isaan, Thailand’s Eastern and largest region.
