A top spot for unpretentious kicks on Khao San Road
KHAO San Road’s jumble of bars and stalls, and constant stream of wide-eyed backpackers, might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but dismiss this area and you’ll be missing some nightlife gems – such as Bangkok’s first city beach club, Superflow (facebook.com/superflowbeachclub), the Irish pub that never closes, Mulligans (seriously, it’s open 24 hours a day. mulligansthailand.com), and the Roof Bar (featured here).
Opened nine years ago by tour company P2N Destinations, this no-nonsense venue is all about kicking-back with reasonably priced cold beers (B100) while listening to live renditions of international hits. And the Roof Bar’s house bands really know their stuff. On any given night you can expect the playlist to jump from country and pop, to pop-rock, disco, and funk, and it’s great fun.

The music kicks off each evening with an acoustic show at 7.30pm, followed by a full band from 9.30pm-11.30pm, and another band from 11.30pm-1.30am. One of the most popular acts is the Tiger Band (which performs every Mon, Wed, and Fri from 11.30am-1.30am), whose lively lead singer recently appeared in The Voice Thailand.
Most of the service staff at The Roof have worked with the bar since it opened, and they have their friendly banter down pat. Visit once, and they’ll most likely remember you the next time you drop by.
As you’d expect with a bar nestled in the heart of Khao San Road, Roof Bar offers a long list of boozy cocktails (start at B120) and buckets (B500). We know from past experience that they are definitely not for the faint hearted. So if you’re one of those unfortunate souls who suffers from hangovers easily, stick to the beers.
The Roof Bar opens daily from 4.30pm-1.30am.

Getting there
Roof Bar is located next to the Center Point Plaza Hotel and Shopping Mall midway down Khao San Road. The area isn’t serviced by the MRT or BTS, so the most practical way to travel here is by taxi. If you have time, though, and fancy a boat trip on the river, ride the BTS to Saphan Taksin station and then take the Chao Phraya Express boat from Sathorn pier (under the bridge). Khao San is a short walk from Phra Athit (Pier 13). Note that the boats stop running at 8pm.
