THE British community in Bangkok is stepping up its campaign to save the British embassy on Wireless Road following reports that the UK government plans to sell off the site.
Apart from petitions to lobby the Foreign & Commonwealth Office against the sale, outraged Brits in Thailand have sought assistance from several Thai institutions, including the Association of Siamese Architects and the Ministry of Culture’s Fine Arts Department.

“Since many of the buildings in the British embassy date back at least 80 years, we hope to find a way of getting some kind of preservation order on them,” explained a prominent member of the British community.
“We recognize that some of the compound may still be sold off for redevelopment, but we are hoping to save the historically important ambassador’s residence and the statue of Queen Victoria located in the adjoining gardens.”
The British embassy occupies some of the most valuable real estate in Bangkok. Approximately 20% of the original compound was sold five years ago to the Central Group.
Former British ambassador Mark Kent, who ended his tenure in Thailand last month, has confirmed that the sale of the embassy is “under review.”
The petition can be found here.
