Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Company Limited joins hands with Wongpanit, leader in recycling and garbage management industry in a bid to promote waste segregation and recycling of used PET bottles to the proper management cycle in systematic manner.
This effort aims at continuing the commitment in natural resource conservation and reducing the amount of plastic trash. Under the collaboration, Wongpanit announces that it will buy used PET bottles of Suntory PepsiCo at higher price than the market's average at 1 Baht per kilogram.
Mr. Charonchai Salyapong, Corporate Affairs Director of Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Company Limited or SPBT, operator and distributor of beverages under Suntory and PepsiCo trademarks, said that “Suntory PepsiCo follows its long-standing commitment in performing beverage business with focus on sustainable use of plastic. This goal corresponds with the consistent growth of PET bottle packaging that is widely popular due to its clear, clean, safe and light weighted qualities as well as shock and crack resistance. Also, it can prevent permeation of oxygen and carbon dioxide and can be recycled at unlimited times. PET plastic can be transformed in synthetic fiber for clothing and garment industries as well as furniture covers, carpets, filter sheets, straps and various types of packaging including food packaging.
Realizing the harm from the worsening man-made environmental issues, especially the plastic waste from consumption, Suntory PepsiCo joins hands with Wongpanit Garbage Recycle Separation Plant Company Limited in an attempt to promote waste segregation and recycling of PET bottles. The collaboration began in 2012 with the goal to let all Thais realize about the problem and become part of the change to reduce excessive waste with the means of “Waste Separation for Recycling.” Under this, used packaging from PET bottles, cans and other garbage that can be recycled will enter the waste management process in a systematic way.
One of the schemes implemented by the two firms in raising recycling behavior is to build motivation in consumers’ mind through price scheme. Under this scheme, the used PET bottles from “Suntory PepsiCo” will be purchased at higher price than the market’s average. Wongpanit waste purchasing outlets nationwide have already announced that they will purchase PET bottles of Pepsi, Pepsi Max Taste, Mirinda, 7 Up, goodmood, ready-to-drink Liption Tea, Aquafina drinking water and Gatorade sport drink at the price of 1 Baht-higher than the market price. Consumers can check for Wongpanit’s daily buying-selling price from www.wongpanit.com or from Wongpanit’s purchase points nationwide at its Call Center 081-887-6888.”

Dr. Somthai Wongcharoen, founder of Wongpanit Garbage Recycle Separation Plant Company Limited, revealed that, “In 2018, Thailand produced 27.93 million tons of garbage in which around 2 million tons were plastic trash. 330,000 tons were PET bottles. Among that amount, 280,500 tons were white and clear plastic bottles for beverage packaging and 222,500 tons were white and blue plastic bottles. 45,900 tons were plastic film for food packaging and other packaging If serious waste segregation for recycling process is implemented in systematic manner, it will reduce the amount of the waste that needs to be buried and the possibility of them leaking to the environment. PET bottles can be recycled repeatedly and begins from the producer, the consumer, the waste collector’s collection, the systematic waste segregation and the recycling process to the continuing industry. All of these are part of what’s called the circular economy. However, many consumers do not yet realize that PET bottles can be recycled in which they can be transformed into synthetic fiber for clothing and garment industries as well as packaging products and food packaging. Wongpanit then joins hands with Suntory PepsiCo in raising consumers’ awareness that PET bottles can be purchased at quite a high price in the market. This will raise the activity in waste segregation before being fed to the recycling process in systematic manner.” |
Additionally, Dr. Somthai revealed that, “Current recycling technology as well as cleaning and residue elimination technology in modern recycling process have advanced a great deal and are recognized for their high standard at international level. As a result, recycled PET or rPET packaging is used widely in food and beverage industries from the US to many countries in European Union and Japan. For Thailand, it is one of the nations that implement the recycling and rPET packaging schemes for both consumption and export to many countries.
“If Thais pay a serious heed to plastic bottles segregation and recycling, plastic bottles will not be plastic waste issue ever again.” Charonchai added.
