Whether you’re new to netball, haven’t played in years, or are after a more competitive game, this popular league caters for all aspects of the sport NETBALL was introduced to Bangkok in 2002 by a group of women determined to continue their passion for the sport while living abroad, and to develop friendships within the expat circles. While working out the logistics of how to establish an actual netball league, a tennis court in On Nut was found and it was time to practice some netball skills and enjoy the opportunity to be able to run about and have fun. |
Hard courts at Bangkok Patana School were secured some months later, with netball lines being added – thus becoming the first true netball home. It was time to form a committee and get this league up and running – with the very first committee meeting to be chaired by Angela Baker with the support of Jenni Jones, Kerry Meaden-Kendrick, Janet Williams, Nicole Holder and Kesa Sribedyand. Word-of-mouth attracted interest from many – with six expat teams keen to register and participate in this new sporting event! By the end of 2002, the Bangkok Netball League (BNL) had be established; with a committee of volunteers organizing weekly games and umpiring, courts outlined and teams excitedly preparing netball uniforms for their weekly outing. In 2004 the netball moved to a new indoor venue at NIST International School on Sukhumvit Soi 15. Within a short space of time, the interest level of local expats had grown so much that teams were asking to register – no one wanted to miss this new exciting opportunity! |
Today, the Bangkok Netball League continues and has moved from strength to strength with a group of volunteer committee members working hard to ensure that netball in Bangkok is accessible and successful each season. With the ongoing support and determination from this team of wonderful ladies, the league has provided expat and local women with an opportunity to continue playing (for some it’s a chance to learn a new sport), meet new people and to build strong friendships – both on court and off!
NIST International School remains the netball league venue today, with games being played on Monday evenings from early September through until April (with some breaks throughout to accommodate public and school holidays).
There are currently 12 teams participating in the league across two divisions, with players of all ability levels encouraged to join in and have some fun.
Whether you are new to netball, haven’t played in years or are after a more competitive game, the netball league caters for all aspects of the sport so please get in touch.
Aside from the court time, the committee also hosts a number of social events throughout the season – encouraging the social development off the court while supporting our league sponsors: Aspire Fitcorp Asia (Platinum), Zaks Wine Pub, Bangkok Prep International School, and Harrow International School.
The new season will kick off on September 1, 2015. We would love to hear from you!
