From questionable beginnings, the world's greatest snack food has finally caught on in the capital, so farewell to those dodgy white bread infiltrators and hello to super sandwiches.
Invented 300 hundred years ago by a roguish member of Britain's gentry whose title gave the dish its name, the humble sandwich has slowly conquered the real and culinary world ever since.
John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), a notorious gambler who came up with the idea of food stuffed between two pieces of bread so that he would not have to leave his gaming table to take supper, naturally had no inkling of the impact his snack would have thereafter.
Bangkok, after a slow start when tasteless white bread and highly inappropriate fillings were the norm, is now coming to terms with the sandwich in all its glory and multitude of delicious forms. True, while some street vendors still ply their take on what constitutes a sandwich, and it's generally not great, more and more independent outlets and hotels are coming up with increasingly sophisticated sandwiches made using international quality bread that are equal to anywhere in the world.
But it's not just the Brits who developed a dish based on bread. The French have their version - albeit on a single slice - known as Croque Monsieur, essentially grilled ham and cheese with a white sauce. They also have Croque Madame, which in its most basic form, has fried or poached egg on top.
The Big Chilli has been in search of the best and most scrumptious sandwiches in Bangkok and the following is a selection of those that caught our eye and delighted our taste buds.
Clearly, we haven't covered all possibilities available in Bangkok, so send your favorite sandwich or Croque Monsieur / Madame or even baguette to [email protected]
