Bangkok, after a slow start when tasteless white bread and highly inappropriate fillings were the norm, is now coming to terms with the sandwich in all its glory and multitude of delicious forms. True, while some street vendors still ply their take on what constitutes a sandwich, and it's generally not great, more and more independent outlets and hotels are coming up with increasingly sophisticated sandwiches made using international quality bread that are equal to anywhere in the world.
But it's not just the Brits who developed a dish based on bread. The French have their version - albeit on a single slice - known as Croque Monsieur, essentially grilled ham and cheese with a white sauce. They also have Croque Madame, which in its most basic form, has fried or poached egg on top.
