Know and Celebrate Kin-J: 4 facts about the Vegetarian Festival

5/10/2018

Comments

foodpanda Thailand is inviting all Thais to celebrate the Vegetarian Festival this 2018, but before anything else, here are some facts you need to know whether this annual ritual is suitable for your body.

1. What is Kin-J?
Kin-J or the Vegetarian Festival is one of the most important events celebrated in Thailand especially among the Thai-Chinese community. It’s a nine-day meat-free Chinese festival adapted by many Thais even those without Chinese ancestry. This year, the Vegetarian Festival will be held from October 8 to 17.

2. What are the dos and don’ts during the Kin-J festival?
Although this event is called the ‘Vegetarian Festival’, the food that the participants can only eat during this period is strictly vegan. Apart from abstaining from meat and any product from animals, consuming strong spices and vegetables are also prohibited, namely: garlic, coriander, onion, garlic chives, and spicy food. Abstinence from alcoholic drinks and smoking is also required.

3. The religious reasons for the Vegetarian Festival
From the religious perspective, there are two main purposes for the Kin-J Festival. First, it is believed that the Kin-J food will balance and detoxify the body. Secondly, by participating in the festival, you preserve the life of the animals that are slaughtered for food.

4. Not all Kin-J food are for weight loss
Many people believe that by abstaining from meat and animal products will help with weight loss. However, truth be told, many of the food during the Kin-J festival are high in carbs, grease, sugar and soy sauce. This will harm your health in the long run. To make your diet healthier, make sure to eat protein such as tofu and beans during this period. For carbs, go for whole wheat bread, rice berry rice or sugar-free cereals instead of white rice.

If you think the Kin-J diet is not suitable for your body, you can always switch to alternatives. As mentioned, most of the Kin-J food are carb-based and oily. If it does not specifically work well with your body, you can try switching to other healthy food options while still celebrating the festival. Don’t force your body to stick to a dietary routine that does not go well for it.
