the Thai historical mythology on the full-moon night of Loy Krathong.
Legend has it that during the period of Sukhothai (meaning ‘the dawn of happiness’), a royal consort named Nang Noppamas created a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves and flowers, and presented it to the King. That beautiful creation became the first krathong to float on the river as a sign of gratitude to the river goddess.Since then, beauty pageants conducted in Nang Noppamas’ honour have become a traditional part of the Loy Krathong celebrations.
