3  restaurants on foodpanda that go by environmentally friendly packaging

If you’re a regular user of foodpanda app, you may have noticed that around a year ago we have introduced a cutlery opt-in and opt-out button, where customers can choose to receive a set of cutlery from a restaurant or not.

While this may not have made a big difference to you, this actually resulted in a decrease in plastic wastage. According to the customers who responded to the “cutlery button”, 60% have opted out of cutlery, which allowed restaurants to remove plastic cutlery from the delivery box.

Apart from the government sector, other sectors like businesses, startups, and restaurants have also begun to take action against the single-use plastic that goes beyond cutlery. We looked at 3 different restaurants that used recycled packaging.
1.Pizza Massilia
This gourmet pizzeria is owned by Chef Luca Appino, an Italian food lover who came to Thailand in 2004, and founded Pizza Massilia in 2015.

“Luca sees the importance of using recyclable materials for food delivery, that is why we are adopting zero plastic in our packaging,” said Laura Burini, Marketing and Communications co-ordinator at Gusto F&B Managing & Consulting Co., Ltd. “From pizza boxes to a la carte menus,  we use plant-fiber and biodegradable materials which takes around 6 weeks to decompose. Since September last year,  Pizza Massilia has introduced a non-plastic mineral bottle which takes around 180 days to decompose in addition to the plastic-free straw and bamboo-made cutlery, “ she added.

2. Broccoli Revolution

Broccoli Revolution is a trendy vegetarian restaurant situated on Sukhumvit 49. It was founded by multiple Thai founders in 2016 who are passionate about the environment and healthy-eating. The restaurant employed recyclable and non-plastic materials for packaging both for dine-in and food delivery. Krongkan Pienpanich, General Manager said they use morning glory stems instead of plastic straw and sells washable straw for customers to bring, wash and bring to the shop. “We won’t be providing any straws to the customers except for menus that actually require straws. Using recyclable materials is not enough, but reducing waste is also very important, “ she said.

3. Tonic

Tonic is a healthy fast food restaurant that serves healthy food but filling. Yinny Chow, the owner said that using a recyclable material for packaging might have a higher cost but it’s extremely important for everyone to be more environmentally cautious. Her restaurant is using a starch-natural fiber made from Cassava plant to make boxes. Also, the cover is made of biodegradable plastics. “foodpanda “cutlery” option is very useful for reducing the use of plastic. Reducing and recycling should go hand in hand if we want to save the planet,” Yinny said.
