Beautiful Restaurants In september

24/9/2019

Comments

In this new monthly column, The BigChilli celebrates restaurants in Thailand that excel in their design as well as their cuisine.

Dining in beautiful surroundings is regarded by many as a key element in their choice of restaurant for lunch or dinner. It sets and maintains the mood for a memorable dining experience – and is often the main reason for a return visit. The purpose of this new photo feature is therefore to pay homage to those owners who have invested in creating a Beautiful Restaurant for the pleasure of Bangkok’s diners.

A Passionate Night of Dining

Tucked elegantly on the 9th floor of Emquartier, is Flamenco.

A quaint place with an array of decoration, perfect blend of modern and antique furniture plus a spectrum of vibrant colours, this entire lounge/cocktail bar is indeed a dedication to passionate living.

Many people do miss a big element here though, the food is not your ordinary convenient dishes or side dishes for a night out drinking. It goes far beyond that, as the food here is as passionate and celebrates good living. It was a gourmet experience when we visited, and to us, Flamenco is firstly a refined restaurant.

Tesit Amatyakul (Mont) is currently the Executive Sous Chef for Flamenco Bangkok. With him helming the kitchen, Flamenco delivers a gourmet dining experience that uplifts your spirit.

Interestingly, Chef Mont began as a dishwasher during his study days in Sydney, Australia. Through sheer commitment, passion and the support of his mentors, he perfected his culinary skills across different restaurants spanning a decade. He relocated back to his homeland and was the opening team for Flamenco. We say that is passion indeed!

Creative Cocktails, Great Nibbles @skyon20bangkok

There’s a lot to love about rooftop bars. It’ll leave you with nothing but great memories.

In Bangkok, in downtown Asok-Phrom Phong section of the city, Sky on 20 is an award winning rooftop destination. Aptly named after its location on Sukhumvit Soi 20, Sky on 20 is in Novotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20. Go up 25 floors and ascend up a flight of stairs. Comfortable sofas dot the perimeter and welcome you in. Come early for sunset and savor a few drinks. Observe the manicured garden and trees and the bright colours and lights. The complimentary popcorn is a unique touch that we adore. Reminds us of the cinema, but only better - as this is a movie of life down below and the hustle and bustle of cosmopolitan Bangkok!

36 creative cocktails are available for your selection. Zoom in on their signature drinks “Sunset” which is artfully created to mirror the evening hues of the setting sun. Or “Bango”- a rum based mix with homemade chutney, or “Winter is coming”, an inspired drink from the famous TV series, Game of Thrones. It is garnished with rosemary and sugar to create a snow-covered pine branch in winter.

For nibbles and platters for sharing, we highly recommend their thin crust pizzas - it is just the right amount of ‘doughy. Hummus lovers, aim for the fried zucchinis that come with a hummus dip. Ask for seconds, it goes well with the chicken or that final pizza bite! The Gouda cheese  platter with mustard and pepper also creates a unique flavour profile. As the first few stars mark their position in the sky, order a second (or third) cocktail, or perhaps it’s time for that beer.

Sky on 20 opens daily from 5pm to 1am. The elevated view and Bangkok skyline will never let you down.

Exemplary Brasserie 9

Guest review by Bangkok Beefsteak & Burgundy
Numbers down a little on last year’s lunch, but those attending enjoyed a truly excellent repast marked by the immaculate service provided by the Brasserie 9 team, led by Luca Sigg, Food & Beverage Manager.

Proceedings started at the bar with an aperitif, 2017 Koehler Ruprecht Kallstadter Riesling Kabinett, and tasty nibbles featuring smoked salmon, crab meat, and brie. Our wine spokesman Alan Rankin told me in advance of his intention to be frank and honest, and being true to his word, he delivered by confirming he did not find any of the complexity promised by the wine-maker…

However, he found it to be “Okay”. Similarly, our next white came from the same producer, 2016 Koehler Ruprecht Kallstadter Riesling Saumagen Spätlese, and despite having received a Suckling award of 94 points, it failed to live up to our expectations (though Alan thought it might improve with age).

This wine accompanied a small amuse bouche, Homemade Foie Gras Terrine with Port Wine Jelly and Brioche. Our food spokesman Thomas Nowak, who complimented the quality of the breads served throughout the meal, ultimately expressed satisfaction at this modest serving of Foie Gras, considering how much else followed it.
Picture
Our first starter was Alaska King Krab Salad with Avocado, Radish and Saffron Dressing. I for one was very pleased that I could enjoy a second helping thanks to another member’s allergy to crab. Thomas also enjoyed this and the accompanying salad.

It was served together with 2017 Enderle&Moll Spätburgunder, a light (some might say thin tasting) rosé style Pinot Noir that left most of us with puckered lips, thanks to its dryness. Although a bit better with food, its “slightly surprisingly grippy finish”, as described by one critic, I thought was the understatement of the day. As always, the Club chose the wines so we are solely responsible.

A generous helping of Mushroom Cream Soup with a scent of truffle came next, piping hot and lacking nothing but perhaps a trifle more decoration. It came with 2013 Gaja Ca Marcanda Promis (Merlot-Syrah) which received the seal of approval from Alan which he thought was well matched to the richness of the soup.

Andiamo! Let’s go to Rossano’s

Rossano’s is an established name in the Italian food scene in Bangkok. The super friendly Executive Chef Matteo Verini leads the kitchen team here - dishing out specials and Italian classics in a spacious house in downtown Sukhumvit.

The interior touches in Rossano’s reminded us of a typical country house in Tuscany, Italy - pastoral and cozy. Grappa bottles line the wall niches and Rossano’s signature pig mascots give a warm welcome.

Our lunch started with a plate of small bites from the region of Liguria, where Chef Matteo is originally from. Its Mediterranean coastline is known as the Italian Riviera, with several fishing villages that are a must-visit. Next up, we sampled the Rossano’s selection - a wide range of meat and cheeses from across Italy. Highlights for us were the mozzarella on tomatoes, fried squid, eggplant and Mortadella - a famous cured pork sausage from Bologna.

Chicken & More@Piri Piri Flaming Grill

With a no-nonsense approach to cooking, Piri Piri prides itself on offering fast and tasty food that doesn’t scrimp on quality. While their grilled chicken is the main star, this restaurant chain also has other delish burgers, beef grill and a selection of salad. We came one afternoon to have a feast…

The casual and rustic atmosphere was welcoming. Piri Piri has several branches across Bangkok. Location is key, as we all say - and this chain has got it - superb locations within Siam Paragon, Emporium, Terminal 21 and their latest opening in Trendy Building on Sukhumvit Soi 13.

We started the meal with the must-have Piri Piri Chicken, cooked the Portuguese way. The piping hot fries were a welcoming sight, we downed it with gulps of ice-cold Coke (or soft drink of your choice) and happiness rushed in. We had a great time sharing the various plates of chicken. Lemon & Herb Chicken was most memorable. 4 distinct bottles of sauce were available at every table. Hot Chilli, Thai Salsa, Sweet Chilli and Extra Hot - the last one is surely not for the faint hearted.

It was also possible to swap out the fries and have a bowl of fried rice, to accompany your chicken. Beef lovers - move towards the Grilled Meat section in the menu where Tenderloin 200grams kicks off the selection. Combo options also aplenty for anyone wanting to mix and match and have a portion of seafood with your chicken. We tried the prawns and sea bass, interchanging them with different sauces! Oh, what a great lunch!

My Name is Lola

Dining in Lola by Cocotte is fun. It is conveniently located on Ekkamai Soi 12.

Upon entering, the decor had to be the first thing we noticed. With a blue Vespa parked in the front, and a gigantic palm tree model in the center; the venue boasts an albeit unusual yet creative aesthetic that is playful yet not over-the-top. Warm and bright, with cheerful colors, it makes the perfect photo spot.

Lola is not just the name of the restaurant; but also a persona. It tells the story of the travels of a small-town girl from Italy and her travels to New York, where she falls in love with the food scene there and opens a restaurant featuring her favourite: Italian and New York cuisine!

The menu in Lola by Cocotte is inspired from Lola’s diary, and we applaud it. The story of Lola is one that we can easily relate to - the earnest discovery of new cuisine and new experience as we travel. We adore the laid back feels in this restaurant. We chose several of Lola’s favourites and began feasting. Signatures here are the Burgers, Pizzas & Pastas!

A Lunch Journey with Soba

9/8/2019

On their website, Soba Factory is classified as a Japanese micro Izakaya, but there is nothing micro about the authentic taste it delivers.

Located on the Lobby Level of the expansive Bangkok Marriott Marquis, Soba Factory has a seating capacity of 30 and is open for lunch and dinner in 2 shifts, with lunch ending at 2.30pm & dinner starting at 6.00pm.

Their newly launched Soba Set Lunch is value for money. Choose either cold or hot homemade soba. Onwards, choose a mini donburi or sushi set to complement your soba. For the namesake of the place, we say start with the soba. Worry not of the slurping sound you make, no one will judge…
Picture
Picture
Alternatively, you may also start with the hot miso soup, which is presented alongside a plate of salad, pickled vegetables and an appetizer - all inclusive in the lunch set! For the mini donburi, select from a choice of katsu, oyako, katsu curry, tori soboro, salmon ikura, bara chirashi and ten don. The sushi and maki set comes with 6 slices of variations.

Daily dessert is hot red bean with toasted rice cake. Iced/hot green tea is included - and we really liked how the service crew paid attention to this - our glasses (and cups) were never half empty. There was something really comforting when cupping a hot cup of tea in your hands - feeling the heat and warmth and in that moment, it almost felt like the hands of time had slowed down - so we all can order a second helping of sweet goodness.
Picture
Picture
We also sampled an assortment of yakitori - the pork belly and beef selections were memorable, and there’s a huge selection - so surely you will find a few (or all) to your liking. Cold and hot towels were presented before and after our meal respectively. During our walk out of the restaurant, we saw the chef hard at work, kneading the dough and making soba noodles, for the incoming dinner crowd surely…

We humbly received the food during this memorable lunch, as per the saying Itadakimasu! We received it, and we enjoyed it - and for that, we say thank you...
