The 22nd edition of the "Remembering of Somdet Ya" exhibition based on the theme of the “Productive Hands: Constructive Works” is to honour the late Princess Mother’s greatest contribution to improve sustainable lives of the hill tribe people

Throughout her life, Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Boromrajajonani, the late Princess Mother who was revered across the nation as Somdet Ya, had tirelessly worked with her two hands to initiate many projects aiming to generate sustainable income and nurture the well-being of the people.

To mark her birthday anniversary which falls on October 21, Siam Piwat has joined with Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage and Thai Beverage Plc to organize the 22nd edition of the “Kid Tueng Somdet Ya” (Remembering of Somdet Ya) based on the theme of “Muea Thee Sang: Ngan Thee San” (Productive Hands: Constructive Works) from October 18 to 27, 2019 at the Lifestyle Hall, 2nd floor of Siam Paragon. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over the ceremony on October 26 at 5.30pm.

Thanpuying Putrie Viravaidya, the Secretary-General of Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, said about this year’s event “All Thai people remembered in their hearts how Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Boromrajajonani had devoted her life to improve the living conditions of people through her compassion and understanding.  She had worked hard to bring benefits and happiness to Thai people and always gave a helping hand to turn the denuded land into the fertile property. Thai people can find viable options that would keep them permanently supporting for themselves, families and the country.

“In addition to the presentation of the life and works of Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Boromrajajonani who dramatically changed the denuded hills of the North with forests and guided the struggling and vulnerable communities toward self-sufficiency and independence through her initiative Doi Tung Development Project, the exhibition features the photos of hands of people working around Doi Tung mountain in the northern province of Chiang Rai in different jobs such as coffee tree planting, coffee bean roasting, saa-paper making, ceramic making, flower planting, textile weaving, and embroidering. Captured by two veteran photographers, the pictures focus only on the hands of these people without showing their faces as a metaphor to express how Somdet Ya had given a helping hand to provide job creation and incomes for her people and the hands of these people will prolong the fruits of knowledge that she had planted to create effective works for their stable and sustainable jobs.”

Mom Luang Disnadda Diskul, the chairman of Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, added “Somdet Ya had a strong ambition to provide equal opportunity and quality of life for all people living around Doi Tung who in the past had inequality of basic living and reliance on opium. She realized that the roots of problems were ‘the poverty and the lack of opportunity’ and these problems must be solved in every side from ‘the poor health, the poverty to the illiteracy’. The development assistance must be people-centric and generates the economic development, yet sensitive to socio-geographical contexts. The brand ‘DoiTung’ had thus set up to be a principle business model for society based on sustainable production methods or ‘3S Model’ that had been modified from the working principles of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. The 3S Model divides the development process into three phrases - survival, sufficiency and sustainability – that is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nation.

“The Doi Tung Development Project initiated by Somdet Ya is not only the model to help farmers weaning from their traditional crop of opium and attain self-sufficiency and independence, but also the model of generating sustainable alternative living for many countries such as Myanmar, Afghanistan and Indonesia to learn and modify to fit with their social contexts. Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage also initiates other social responsibility endeavours in Thailand as a way to preserve Somdet Ya’s greatest dedication.”
