The long-standing partners came together at The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok on Tuesday 12th May 2020, to launch this ambitious initiative. The hotel’s chefs will bake 300 loaves of raisin bread and 1,000 oatmeal banana cookies every day for 20 consecutive days, to be distributed by SOS. By the end of the project, Marriott and SOS will have delivered a staggering 6,000 loaves of bread and 20,000 cookies – a truly herculean CSR effort!
Marriott usually sends surplus food from the group’s F&B outlets to families in need, via SOS. But with most Bangkok hotels currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the partners needed to think of a new way to deliver their food. This CSR project has been made possible by the generosity of the group’s local suppliers; Centuryhouse Dairy and Premier Dairy Product are providing 520kg of unsalted butter, Laemthong Corporation Group has supplied 840kg of wheat flour and 7,600 eggs, Betagro and The Saitarn Foundation have offered 3,150 eggs, and Shrewsbury International School is sending 100kg of nuts, oats and raisins.
“During these challenging times, it is more critical than ever that we come together, support each other and give back to our community. Marriott International is a proud partner of SOS in Thailand; this innovative organization does wonderful work, providing meals to the members of society who need it the most. Our hotels’ restaurants already support food donations to SOS, and this initiative will further ensure that the people who rely on SOS do not miss out on their vital donations,” said Jakob Helgen, Area Vice President – Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia & Myanmar, Marriott International.
“We are delighted to be at the forefront of this important CSR activity. During the recent situation, we realized that we had plenty of resources that could be channeled towards charitable causes, so we spoke to our partners to see how we could help. Our sister properties have now teamed up with our own associates to take on this challenge. I would also like thank all of our suppliers for their generous donations – we could not have done it without them,” added Chooleng Goh, General Manager, The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok.
Founded in 2000, SOS uses excess food to provide over 350,000 meals per month to communities in need across Southeast Asia. This program also helps divert waste away from landfills sites, thus reducing CO2 emissions. The partnership forms part of Marriott International’s global CSR program, “Serve 360: Doing Good In Every Direction”, which is committed to creating a positive impact in every destination in which the company operates.
